cairns
too much angst and frustration is credited to the messy middle.
the in-between.
but isn’t that the majority of the journey? the already but not yet.
i’ll take a line from the friendly intercom voice at the edge of the moving sidewalk midst your European airport of choice, “mind the gap”.
there’s plenty to learn in the gap.
pausing, receiving, gratitude seems timely for the gap.
look back – opportunities for gratitude and making note of how far you’ve gone.
look forward – opportunities for the open-handedness of possibilities.
pause in the present. see the cairns.
on various treks and hikes, there are cairns distributed along the way. no cairns needed at the trailhead or at the summit – those destinations are pretty clear.
the cairns are needed when the way forward is unclear, where there is risk of going off-trail, getting lost.
they are markers. but also memorials. to remember where you have been.
the cairns are in the middle.
cairns say:
- someone’s gone before you
- look how far you’ve come
- you’re on the right path
- keep going
the pause: where are the cairns?
where do i see the Lord hedging me behind and before?
where’s the next right step?
eyes up. sure-footed. open-handed. in the gap.
let’s revive the slow club membership.
key duties: pausing, noticing, listening, minding the gap.
key outputs: gratitude, peace, courage.
